Yin-Yang Floater. May 1975, Evolving Design
This is an older piece from 1975 that I did while attending UT Austin. I believe an influence was the “I-Ching” which I was reading at the time while throwing coins of divination. It was created using my evolving design process I frequently use. See the “Evolving Design” category for an explanation of that process. The overall figure of the “Yin-Yang Floater” is made up of all seven elements that combine to form the floater. Here is a tour of those elements. Start at the top of the work, that topmost and central shape is the head with two eyes, a snout, and a headdress. The “Yin-Yang Floater” is floating with a slight list to his left. At the bottom of the drawing (lower right as you view it) his left leg and foot are lower than that of the right. Coming back up to the top of the floater, his left arm is foreshortened and at the bottom of this element is a leaf man. Moving over to the left side as you view the floater, the right arm is extended and has a figure running up the arm. That running figure has its right leg on top of the helmet of an armored Samurai who is standing in a wide stance. The Samurai goes to make up the right side of the torso of the Yin-Yang Floater. The right foot of the Samurai is just touching the top of the element that makes up the right leg of the floater. Moving now to the upper center of the floater, in between the elements comprising the arms and below the head is the center of the upper chest (solar plexus) of the floater. Below the chest element and to the lower right is what appears to be a monkey who is under jet power with exhaust and travelling right to left as you view the drawing. The monkey element goes to make up the left lower torso of the floater. Finally, below the monkey and detached is the last element of the overall figure that goes to make up the lower left leg of the floater. It is a figure ice skating on a curved surface with his body and head facing to the right as we view it. Just in front of the ice skater on the bridge of its nose is what appears to be a tuba player descending stairs. So, thank you for hanging through that description of the seven elements comprising the overall “Yin-Yang Floater” I am sure that was not easy. Despite this effort describing it, it is intended to a fun and whimsical piece that is in movement floating on the paper. I am sure a dream interpreter would find a lot to occupy themselves with studying what all of this may mean. I have only described what I see, the meaning is up to your interpretation.
