Inspiration’s Charge Up Reality Hill. May 1976
This is from my Big Black Book, a book I gained in college for drawing. It is a large bound book with white paper. This drawing is in pencil.
So, let’s talk about it, the central figure is “Inspiration” he is the central large figure at the bottom of the composition. He is charging up Reality Hill holding a standard (a pole with a flag). His conscience meets him heading the opposite direction on the hill in the background, he is running too. I think he is counseling “caution” as in you do not what to get to inspired only to have your hopes and aspirations dashed. No matter, Inspiration is not having it. Within the flag, is a rooster looking figure also running (lots of running), and he is climbing stairs. I think this rooster figure represents my higher self-joined above with me in my mind and heart. Also within the flag is a “Holly Ghost” figure, his body is on its side in a hour glass shape and his head is resting on the second hill. Last the three rings at the top of the standard represent the holy trinity pulsing down from the heavens into the pole, and through the man it is converted to a single ring pulsing down into the earth. I had not yet seen the work of the artist Umberto Boccioni (when I drew this), in particular his work titled, “Unique Forms of Continuity in Space”, it is a bronze statue cast in 1950. It is in the Met and I have loved it since I saw it. For me, my figure Inspiration in my work as some correspondence with this work of his. What do you think?
