Infinity Horizons. March 1976

This is part of what I call the “Big Black Book” collection. I bought a large black book for drawing in Austin, while at UT Austin. In turn I filled it in with a whole array of spontaneous drawings, all employing what I call my “evolving design” process (definition found with “Evolving Design” category).

This is in pencil, and the theme is infinity. And there is a lot going on, as is frequently the case with my drawings. Look around, there is on the lower left corner a landscape with a tree and a bridge and below the bridge a head in profile. A leaf coming through a portal in top center. An oval scene that includes a mountain road going into a tunnel, and then what I take to be a close-up view into the tunnel directly below it. On the far-right middle is a kind of elephant looking figure with smoke coming up from his snout area. Lots of figure “8s” throughout, and a portal with a cracked floor and then a focus in on some mountains in the small trapezoid window with lines drawing you into to it.

I think of these evolving design compositions as waking dreams, my unconscious and the collective unconscious set free to express.
