Fire, Air, Earth, Water. June 2021
This is a mandala, inspired in the spirit of the Navajo tradition. It is intended to draw you into to it to feel its complexity and harmony all at once. The title is derived by the elements at the four corners, starting at the upper left is “Fire,” then in a clockwise motion is in turn, “Air,” “Earth,” and “Water.” The center of the cross is interesting. Look closely, it is a landscape, set within the center square, and is a smaller square itself. What is intriguing is that the whole of the cross, composed of nine squares set together is derived from the landscape in the middle. For an explanation of this process, see the shopping category of “Pllars and Lintels” on this web site.

The piece was composed as an assembly of parts that are taken from my other art work, and then placed together deliberately to form a Mandala. It was a great deal of fun and took on a life of its own. There are lots of four of a kind, a single set of eight, and the totem like spokes of the wheels centered on the flower and the four quads have sixteen spokes. All of them intervals of four – as it should be in accompaniment of the four elements.
