Mandala
These are intended to be balanced and symmetrical and have pleasing forms and repetition. They all have a center and all else builds out from it. They are intended to be spiritual representations of a balanced symmetrical whole. They should hopefully convey peace and harmony and be suitable for meditation.
Note: classically the acknowledge mandalas are of two traditions, the Tibetan and the Navajo Indian. I do not esteem to be representing either of these two given traditions. I am however, a great admirer of both of them. Interestingly, both of these traditions use hand poured colored sand to make their compositions. And at least in the Tibetan process, four priests at the four cardinal sides collaborate to make the composition. After its completion they meditate upon it and then carefully – reverently brush all of the sand into a pile in the center – erasing the mandala. This for them is as it should be and is symbolic of life. That is, there is birth (creation), and there is death (transcendence) and transmutation of form. It is a living pageant of the cycle of life. One that they embrace.
